[00:00] In this lesson, we'll show how to install and activate Ignition Maker Edition. Maker Edition is a free to use version of Ignition, which is great for learning Ignition on your own or for creating personal use projects. To begin, you can download the installer by navigating to the Inductive Automation homepage and clicking Download Ignition. This will take you to the downloads page. This page will automatically sense what operating system you're working on and offer you a button to download the appropriate installer. If you'd like to use a different method for installation, like a zip file with README instructions, the Other Operating Systems and Versions link gives us access to the installation media for the most recent Ignition version across all supported operating systems. One thing to note about Maker Edition is that it's installed from the same fileset as standard Ignition. There is no special Maker installer to worry about, so it simplifies the process, no matter which method you choose for installation.

[01:03] Since the installer file is the easiest of the installation media options, it's the recommended approach, especially if you're new to the platform. We'll use the Windows installer I downloaded earlier for our demo, but the steps will be mostly the same for Linux or Mac platforms. One caution for Linux though, you'll need to make sure the installer file is executable as a program. If you need more information about how to do this, please check out the installation information in the User Manual or the Installing Ignition on Linux video here on Inductive University. Regardless of your operating system, before you begin installation, please make sure you have the necessary installation privileges, such as root, elevated permissions, or admin access. The name for these privileges may vary by operating system. Now we'll run our installer with admin permissions. In the Installer Wizard, we can walk through the steps using the next button. Here, we can just accept the default option for the installation location, unless you'd prefer to install Ignition somewhere else on your machine.

[02:05] For the installation type, the typical option will give us a set of the most commonly used modules, which is a great starting point for Maker projects. Custom installations do allow for more flexibility with module selection, but you can always add or remove modules later if you'd like. The User Manual pages on installing Ignition have more info on what all the options represent, if you'd like more specifics about each step of the process. These modules will give us a set of specialized features that'll help us make the most of Maker edition for our projects. Finally, we're ready to install. As the installation runs, I'll speed up this part for the sake of time. Then we'll click Finish, which finishes the installation and starts the Gateway. Here on the Commissioning page, we get to specify which Ignition edition we wanna install, and it'll perform some additional setup as needed. We'll select the Maker edition. We'll get a reminder that this is only for personal use projects and agree to that.

[03:06] Then we'll get to the license agreement. We can agree with the terms and click next. In Commissioning step two, we'll be prompted for a license key and an activation token. Both of these are free and require only that you have an internet connection and an Inductive Automation account at account.inductiveautomation.com. There's a link here that'll take you to that page from the Activate License window, but I've also included the link in the resources section below this video. I've already logged into my user account in a separate tab and selected Maker edition from the left navigation menu. Now we can generate a license. I'll click the Add button in the bottom right corner of the screen to begin the process. We'll accept another licensing agreement, and our new license key appears. The license key is stored in our user account and can be reused to move to a different installation later if we want. The activation token isn't stored, but a new one can be generated as needed by clicking the three dots menu and selecting Generate Activation Token.

[04:11] Now let's take the license key, head back over to our Activate License window, and paste it in. Then we can return to our account page to copy the activation token. In the Activate License window, we'll paste the activation token and click Next. We've reached step three of Commissioning, creating an initial user account. The user you create here will have full admin and access privileges in Ignition. You'll wanna make sure the credentials you use are both memorable and strong, although they can be changed later in the Gateway if needed. I'll use admin as the username, create my password, and then click next. In this last step, we'll accept the default port settings. You can always alter these later in the Gateway as well. We can click Finish Setup and start the Gateway, and we'll fast forward through the startup process to save a bit of time once again. If you're new to Ignition and wanna explore a sample project, you can enable Quick Start.

[05:10] If you'd prefer to start from scratch, you also have that option. I'll choose start from scratch, and our Gateway is up and running. If this is your first Ignition installation, the first thing you'll wanna do is to download and install the designer, which will allow you to start browsing example projects and creating new ones. You can access the designer installer using this button in the Gateway. You can also refer to a separate IU video on installing the designer, if you'd like to know more about the process. With Maker Edition, you're now ready to start your journey with Ignition and bring your personal projects to life.
