Alarm notification is the act of sending a message to a group of people when an alarm becomes active or clear. In Ignition, this functionality is enabled by having the Alarm Notification Module installed which provides alarm pipelines and email notification.

[00:00] After setting up some alarms on tags, we can then configure those alarms to notify certain people when the tag goes into an alarm state. One thing we need to do to properly notify people, is to set up an alarm notification profile. To do this, we need to log in to the configure section of the gateway web page, and scroll down until we find the alarming section here on the left, and go to the notification page. Here we can set up and configure our notification profiles. The notification profiles are essentially connections to either hardware or software, that allows us to do things like send emails, make calls, or even send out SMS messages so that we can properly notify people that an alarm is happening. Here I'm going to show you how to set up an email notification profile. We first want to click on the link, create new alarm notification profile. We want to make sure the email notification option is selected, and click the next button. We need to give our notification profile a name. I'm just going to call mine email. We can then scroll down a little further, and take a look at these first two properties under email settings. In more recent versions of Ignition, the concept of the gateway network was introduced. With it, you could connect Ignition to an SMTP server that would be used to notify people of any problems with the gateway network. The connection to the SMTP server that the gateway network would use is actually set up up here under the email settings page. If you have already set up a connection to an SMTP server there, then we don't really need you to enter in all of the information again, such as host name, port number, and the username and password to log in. So what these first two settings allow you to do is use the SMTP profile connection that you've already set up. You simply need to check the checkbox of this first setting, and then select the SMTP profile that you've set up earlier here. If you have not set up an SMTP profile connection earlier under the email settings page, don't worry about it. We can set up a connection here instead. I don't have one already set up, so I'm going to make sure that this check box, use SMPTP profile, is unselected, and that there is nothing selected here for SMTP profile. I'm going to set up the connection using these settings down here. First we need to enter in the host name of the SMTP server. We then want to set a port. I'm going to leave mine at the default of 25. We can then choose to enable SSL and TLS. Some SMTP servers require this. The last thing that we need to do is then set the username and password that's going to be used to log in to the SMTP server. My username is Ignition, and I'll go ahead and enter in my password. We can then configure some optional properties if we would like. The first of which is our two-way settings. This allows users to respond to the email that they receive, giving them the ability to acknowledge alarms from the email. If we scroll down a little bit further, we can see that there's POP3 two-way settings. Here we can set up the notification profile to allow notifications to be acknowledged when retrieved from a POP3 mail server. If we scroll down ever further, you can see there's an auditing section. This allows us to tie this notification profile to an audit profile that we have already set up in our gateway. This allows us to store certain events in the audit log, such as when emails go out, and when they're acknowledged. Once we have everything configured the way we want, we then simply need to hit the button at the very bottom, create new alarm notification profile. We can now see my newly created email notification profile.
